Nourish the Liver in Spring and Prevent Allergies

Spring is the season when all things grow. Health regimen is very important in spring(the first season of the year). Find out why here.

Although Spring is full of vitality,  it could be a miserable season for people who have allergies. As all plants grow, their pollens fly with the wind. Families often with children who suffer from allergies which is more painful in Spring season.
In traditional Chinese Medicine,  we often use Ganaderma, Yam, Astragalus and other herbal medicines that can enhance the immune system to make herbal soup to help the changes in our body consititution except acupuncture, cupping massage treatments.
Spring is liver's season, in TCM the Liver is the organ responsible for the smooth flow of emotions as well as Qi and blood. It is the organ that is most affected by excess stress or emotions. The Liver’s partner organ is the Gallbladder.

  • The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and blood in your body. It controls the volume and smooth flow of blood in your vessels and also stores the blood.
  • The eyes are the sensory organ related to the Liver. If you have any eye issues, including blurry vision, red or dry eyes, itchy eyes, it may be a sign deep down that your Liver is not functioning smoothly.
  • The tendons are the tissue associated with the Liver. TCM says that strength comes from the tendons, not muscles. Be like the cat that is strong, agile, and flexible, not the cow, which has huge muscles but little real strength.
  • The taste that corresponds to and supports the Liver is sour. If you crave sour foods, that may be your Liver communicating that it needs an extra boost, so be sure to include high-quality vinegar and sweet and sour recipes in your diet.
  • Anger is the emotion associated with the Liver. If you are often irritable, get angry easily, have trouble unwinding from the day’s activities, have trouble reasoning or going with the flow and letting things go, you are experiencing a Liver function problem. Experiencing these emotions chronically or excessively can seriously unbalance the function of your Liver..

When Liver Qi is imbalanced, hot and spicy foods may cause too much heat. Sour and bitter flavors are said to benefit the Liver meridian.  Excessive frustration and irritation can be especially difficult when the Liver meridian is out of balance. Physical exercise and reading can help restore balance. The fall is a vulnerable time, as well as the winds of March, and extremely hot weather.
Common signs of Liver meridian stress include dry, brittle, thickened nails and pain just below the ribs. Common illnesses include migraines, eye problems, and sinus problems. The Liver meridian circles the genitals, and rashes and discharges are associated with its imbalance, as well as hernias. For women, menstrual problems are common including PMS, painful periods, and heavy bleeding. Uterine fibroids may be related to imbalance of the Liver meridian as well. The Liver and Gallbladder meridian pathways traverse the top and sides of the head, the most common sites for migraine headaches.
The Qi of liver flourishes in the spring when plants are sprouting new growth. That's why Spring is the best time to treat the health conditions caused by liver Qi imbalanced.

Acupressure for Liver Health

Deep press the acupressure point  “Taichong” (Liver 3) which stimulates a key point on the Liver channel. It may be sore, but this means you’re hitting all the right spots! You are unblocking your Liver Qi.Rub this area every day. It’s located on top of your foot where the big toe bone meets the second toe bone (about an inch back from the skin between these toes). Using your thumb, press and massage this spot on both feet (the meridians are on both sides of your body). It will calm you down especially when you get anger.

Infertility? Acupuncture is a great option along with IVF or IUI

Acupuncture has been used successfully for infertility treatment for thousands of years, which offers an effective, time-tested approach to enhancing fertility and treating infertility.

Acupuncture can be used in combination with conventional reproductive medical care or as a primary treatment approach, for women who taking fertility drugs or reproductive technology techniques (such as IVF or IUI). Celine Dion's pregnancy with twins was the result of her sixth In-Vitro Fertilization attempt and she turned to acupuncture therapy to improve her chances of getting pregnant.

Acupuncture can also be effective as a stand-alone approach to treat infertility for those not undergoing conventional medical treatment. Acupuncture helps to regulate hormonal activity, thus regulating menstruation, ovulation, and pregnancy.
A recent study from the British Medical Journal found that among women who received acupuncture and IVF, the pregnancy rates were 65% higher and the rates of live births were nearly twice as high than among women who received IVF with sham acupuncture or no acupuncture.

Acupuncture helps to reduce stress and decrease the hyper sympathetic nervous system response. Studies have shown that high stress levels decrease the likelihood of conceiving. Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate chemical changes within the uterine lining, thickening the endometrium, and preparing the uterus for implantation.

For men, acupuncture can improve sperm motility, volume and concentration as well as increase libido. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, optimum fertility enhancement would involve a course of treatments with the aim of nourishing the Kidney Essence and regulating the menstrual cycle as well as clearing any pathogens that may be interfering with the natural process of conception.

How Acupuncture Works

The ancient Chinese believed that there is a universal life energy, called Qi, present in all things ranging from infinitely tiny molecules to living breathing human beings.

This Qi is said to circulate throughout the body along specific pathways or meridians. As long as this energy flows freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow of energy is blocked, the homeostatic system is disrupted resulting in pain or illness.

Visualize if you will, rivers that flood and cause disasters or an electrical grid short-circuiting that causes blackouts etc. This is what happens to our somatic and spiritual landscapes when our Qi is not flowing harmoniously. The insertion of needles into specific points on these “channels” allows for the manipulation and harmonization of ones Qi, which results in improved health, and thus, increased fertility.
Acupuncture a Brief History

Acupuncture and moxibustion have been used in the Far East to restore, promote, and maintain good health for over 5000 years. The first acupuncture needles were made from stone, and then later from bronze, gold and silver. The first known medical account of acupuncture was The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine (Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen), which dates from around 300 BC.

Acupuncture is rooted in the Daoist philosophy of change, growth, balance, and harmony. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic outlines the principles of natural law and the phases of life – yin and yang, the five elements, the organ system and the meridian network along which the vital acupuncture points are located. These records also contain details of pathology and physiology, which some 2,000 years later provide the theoretical foundation for acupuncture today.
Although acupuncture is used far more extensively in China than in the West, the last few decades have seen huge growth in people seeking the benefits of this safe and highly effective treatment.

TCM Acupuncture moxibustion cupping for TOUGH PAIN, HOW IT WORKS!

In this cold winter, many people complain that the cold weather has made their arthritis pain , joint pain, frozen shoulder pain etc. getting worse .These pain can occur anytime throughout the year, but in the cold and wet months of the winter you may find it getting worse.
The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor or HUANGDI NEIJING: The bible of Chinese Medicine, which has been treated as the fundamental doctrinal source for Chinese medicine for more than two thousand years, the yellow emperor has told us thousand years ago that when the wind, cold and dampness these three evil attack our body , it will cause the pain which is called "Bi" syndrome in TCM. For example, frozen shoulder is caused by cold and high humidity. One of the headaches which is called "wind-cold" headache in TCM is  also caused by wind and cold. Arthritis is also caused by wind-cold-wetness attack.
wind-cold-dampness syndrome or "Bi" syndrome
So in TCM theory, origin of the disease and pathogenesis of wind-cold-wetness type of arthralgia is the attack of wind-cold-wetness evil due to our body "qi deficiency" and the liver, or spleen, or kidney failing to transport, and becoming protracted stasis in the meridian.

And TCM Acupuncture ,cupping , chinese massage(Tuina), moxibustion or herbal therapies are all for balancing our body's "Qi" ,improve liver, spleen or kidney etc. organs' function, and clear the stasis or blockage in the meridian.
So Healing from the root beyond treating the syndromes. If this is what you looking for, please feel confident to book an appointment online, or call us at 416-800-3978

【Case Report】Jarry's another successful case acupuncture for Depression Insomnia

A  46 year-old Phillipino lady with Insomnia and depression for about half year, her friend found us online and took her to our clinic for reflexology therapy for her Insomnia. After the inquiry and inspection diagnosis (The four TCM diagnostic methods refer to inspection , auscultation and olfaction , inquiry and palpation). I suggested her to take Jarry's acupuncture treatments. She was sort of afraid of the needle and didn't think acupuncture will help her Insomnia condition, she didn't want to try acupuncture at all. But her friend who's a very nice gentlemen trying to help her as much as he could, he finally convinced her to see Jarry for the acupuncture treatment. So every week both of them came to see Jarry twice for the acupuncture treatments, after 3 weeks(6 sessions) her sleeping improved a lot, and after 4 weeks total 8 sessions(45minutes/session), her friend told us that she is completely different from the person we saw at the first time.

Depression Insomnia seem very complicated condition and so many people suffer from it. How the Traditional Chinese Medication like acupuncture or herbs can offer tremendously helpful support in healing the root causes of this epidemic? New anti-asthma drugs based on the principle of acupuncture treatment for Asthma

Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine found the underlying principle of "acupuncture treatment of asthma", is expected to make new anti-asthma drugs that could lead to more effective targeted therapy for millions of individuals with asthma...

Acupuncture has been used as an effective alternative treatment of asthma for long time. What's the mechanism behind at the molecular level of this traditional classic acupuncture treatment formular?

Published Wednesday(Feb. 8th,2017) in the journal Science Translational Medicine, Professor Yang Yongqing from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine led a research team about 10 years after, significant progress has been made in basic research on anti-asthma targeted drugs and acupuncture-effect substances.

In a study, published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine, Luis Ulloa, a lead author and immunologist at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and his collaborator from China's Shanghai University examined more than 6,000 compounds and identified a drug called TSG12 that relaxes the muscles and opens the airways in asthma.
This drug treatment, which is not toxic in human cells, can prevent pulmonary resistance in egg-and dust mite-induced asthma.
Researchers found that a protein called MT-2 in asthmatic lung tissue relaxes airway smooth muscle cells and opens the airways but MT-2 was over 50 percent lower in asthmatic lung tissue.
Ulloa and his collaborators transmitted short electrical pulses into mice through electro-acupuncture needles.
It enabled them to identify the specific drug TSG12 that provides better therapeutic treatments for asthma and other respiratory disorders.
The TSG12 treatment was more effective than current treatments, including bronchodilator inhalers used by almost all people with asthma, Ulloa said...

The Regimen of the king of Traditional Chinese Medicine who lived upto 140

"Whenever eminent physicians treat an illness, they must quiet the spirit and settle the will, they must be free of wants and desires, and they must first develop a heart full of great compassion and empathy. They must pledge to devote themselves completely to relieving the suffering of all sentient beings.(凡大醫治病,必當安神定志,無欲無求,先發大慈惻隱之心。誓願普救含靈之苦。)" ----- By Sun Simiao (The king of Chinese Medicine)

Sun Simiao (simplified Chinese孙思邈traditional Chinese孫思邈; Born in 541;died in 682) was a famous traditional Chinese medicine doctor of the Sui and Tang dynasty. He was titled as China's King of Medicine (药王, Yaowang) for his significant contributions to Chinese medicine and tremendous care to his patients.

He lived up to 140 years old, back at that time, the average life expectancy of people was only 40 - 50 years old. The "three little" regimen that he proposed in his health care, that is, having "less in the mind, less food in the belly, less sleep in nature", is well worth our study and practice。

The first is "less in the mind." This is the top of the "three little". The premise of peace of mind is that there are few things in mind. There is little or no trouble with the matter of right and wrong, that is, heart and mind can calm down. Therefore, peacetime must be philosophical, indifferent to fame and fortune, be generous with others, reduce the stimulation of bad emotions...

The second is "less food in the belly." The ancients said: "If you want to be healthy, having ave a clear stomach and clear intestine is the key" To achieve this "double-clear," we must always eat less food. In particular, “Sweetness” and “Fatness” must be “remembered with mercy” and “eat only half full,” so that the stomach can be easily digested, and if you drink more tea, you will naturally have a clear stomach and intestine and disease-free.

The third is "less natural sleep". Sleep is a natural supplement. For the seniors, with the change of the physiological function, relative reduction in sleep is a normal law, and there is no need to bother. However, Sun Simiao said that "less nature sleep" is the ultimate realm of sleep, that is, in the process of natural sleep reduction, to ensure the quality of sleep is the key. It is a blessing for each of us if we can “naturally fall asleep and naturally wake up”.

Jarry's acupuncture for Infertility case report

A 40 year-old lady came for Jarry's acupuncture treatment for infertility last December,  after one course (10 sessions) treatments nothing happened. So she got couple weeks break as Jarry told her, she came back for another course treatments this Feb. After 8 sessions treatments, she told us on phone "Do you know why I didn't come to see Jarry this couple weeks, because I got pregnant!" What a great news from her. We are all very happy for her and she is still coming to see Jarry regularly for preventing morning sickness and miscarriage.
In this case, it's not an easy one because of the age(She is at her 40's), for less than 2 courses acupuncture treatments and she got pregnant, it is not only because Jarry has 28 years clinical experience in treating infertility, but also because the lady didn't give up and she believed that ancient Chinese acupuncture can help her. so her commitment to the acupuncture treatments  is one of the key to success.

Acupuncture can be used in combination with conventional reproductive medical care or as a primary treatment approach, for women who taking fertility drugs or reproductive technology techniques (such as IVF or IUI). More details at http://www.orientalacupuncture.ca/2017/08/infertility-acupuncture-is-great-option.html

Youyou Tu: Discovery of Artemisinin - A gift from Traditional Chinese Medicine to the World

Youyou Tu delivered her Nobel Lecture on 7 December 2015 at Aula Medica, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The lecture was presented in Mandarin.

The 2011 Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award honors a scientist who discovered artemisinin and its utility for treating malaria. Tu Youyou (China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing) developed a therapy that has saved millions of lives across the globe, especially in the developing world. An artemisinin-based drug combination is now the standard regimen for malaria, and the World Health Organization (WHO) lists artemisinin and related agents in its catalog of "Essential Medicines." Each year, several hundred million people contract malaria. Without treatment, many more of them would die than do now. Tu led a team that transformed an ancient Chinese healing method into the most powerful antimalarial medicine currently available.

Preventive treatments by TCM

Along with the development of modern medicine, the heart of clinical task and investigation of theory is shifting from "to rule already ill" to "to prevent the prognosis of a disease".Invigorating the kidney is important to "prevention".

The preventive treatment theory origin in <Huangdi Neijing>, an ancient Chinese medical text that has been treated as the fundamental doctrinal source for Chinese medicine for more than two thousand years. The connotation of "Preventive Treatment" in Traditional Chinese Medicine: first is treating disease before its onset, second is preventing disease from exacerbating(getting worse).
For example ,for diabete type II, either Chinese medicine or acupuncture can control it very well along with the proper diet and life style so it won't get worse to type I or even worse to at lease one complication occur, and once the complication occurs, drug treatment is difficult to reverse, therefore emphasizing the early prevention of diabetic complications .

Over thousand years, "pre-medical intervention before diseases" has been one of the preponderant practices in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to tackle early symptoms of health problems and diseases. A scientific explanation to the "preventive treatments" in TCM on the sub-health condition is therefore put forward following the stress-induced patho-physiological situations. In light of the mordern Western medicine, scientific interpretations for various preventive treatments in TCM, such as cupping, scraping and acupuncture were open-mindedly featured with a de-carbonylation biology which is biochemically fundamental in diabetes, atherosclerosis and free radical biomedicine.

Increased oxidative stress induces inflammation to several tissues/organs leading to cell death and long-term injury. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and autophagic regulatory functions has been widely used as preventive or therapeutic strategy in modern medicine.

One famous legend tells of how once when Bian Que was in the State of Cai, he saw the lord of the state at the time and told him that he had a disease, which Bian Que claimed was only in his skin. The lord brushed this aside as at that time he felt no symptoms, and told his attendants that Bian Que was just trying to profit from the fears of others. Bian Que is said to have visited the lord many times thereafter, telling him each time how this sickness was becoming progressively worse, each time spreading into more of his body, from his skin to his blood and to his organs. The last time Bian Que went to see the lord, he looked in from afar, and rushed out of the palace. When an attendant of the lord asked him why he had done this, he replied that the disease was in the marrow and was incurable. The lord was said to have died soon after.

This story told us why we need preventive treatments. Treating the disease at early stage before getting worse. That's what exactly the TCM preventive treatments( such as acupuncture, cupping, herbs decoction ) do and much more than that. How TCM Acupuncture Treat Stress & Infertility

The debate about the impact of chronic stress on fertility is still unresolved. However, more and more research suggests a strong link between mental health and physical well-being. Stress can wreck havoc on an already delicately balanced endocrine system by increasing the production of cortisol and prolactin, which are two hormones that interfere with proper ovulation and implantation. Elevated adrenal function associated with stress response uses progesterone to produce the hormone cortisol, hence depleting the supply of progesterone, which is needed to thicken the uterine lining. Data also implies that increases in abnormalities within the immune system are greatly compounded by stress and decrease the chance of successful IVF transfer, embryo implantation, and full term live birth. Stress has also been known to decrease or give rise to no ovulation and can increase symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Fertility related stress can further exacerbate an already stressful lifestyle, establishing a viscous loop of continued anxiety.
Chinese medicine has historically sought to treat the whole rather than just a part of a system, and prides itself on the focus of treating the root of disease before too many life altering symptoms can manifest. The differentials associated with the treatment of stress, according to traditional Chinese medicine, are vast. Begin with treatment of symptoms ranging from amenorrhea to migraine headaches, then precisely maneuver back to the root to achieve the desired outcome of fertility. Because of such a strong foundation of seeing "the big picture" in diagnosis, practitioners of Chinese medicine are at an advantage as far as treatment strategies are concerned.

Acupuncture focuses on treating the most problematic symptoms first, such as sleep disturbances or chronic pain conditions that can be exacerbated by chronic stress. Points selected include those that help regulate the endocrine system to avoid over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and misdirection of hormones necessary for reproduction.
Acupuncture also focuses on strengthening the immune system to prevent any misguided inflammatory responses.

Chinese Medicine Acupuncture for sub-health conditions ROCKs

Let's start from Mars500
“Mars500” is an international experiment project to explore Mars initiated by Russia and participated by many countries. It is the first time for human being to simulate the whole process of manned experiment flying to Mars, around the Mars and landing in Mars and back to Earth. The experiment was carried out in Moscow. Six volunteers stayed for 520 days in sealed cabin and overcame difficulties and completed the simulation experiment.
China’s project was“Mars500 TCM syndrome differentiation study in sealed environment for long time”. Daosh four diagnostic instrument was selected by expert team as the only TCM equipment.

what's sub-health conditions?

Why  do I feel weak while my health examination shows nothing wrong?

Astronaut health and job performance are required assessment to ensure safety in long term manned flight. However, in the long interstellar flight, astronaut will face such a health problem: my western medicine indicators are good, but why did I feel uncomfortable? Such as bad appetite, Insomnia, Anxiety, Uclers, Emaciation, Gaunt...
Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) emphasizes " The concept of holism" and " Syndrome differentiation and treatment" , and has unique features and advantages in the assessment of function and health conditions.

In Mars500 experimetns, six volunteers in the mild to moderate fatigue state, the overall autonomic nerve function is more exciting, still at a fairly balanced state, showing varying degrees of sub-health conditions, but no disease. After well-tried, there were signs of recovery in the late stages of the trial. Signs of this dynamic change can be recorded in a responsive vein, which can show the health of the volunteers and can be used as a reference for health assessment.

By TCM four diagnosis, it shows that "Qi" deficiency is the basis of the long airtight environment throughout the card type. All 6 volunteers had "Qi" deficiency syndrome throughout the experiment; it is accompanied by different degrees of liver depression, spleen deficiency, dampness or Yin deficiency.

So TCM focus on Qi deficiency syndrome, combining with the astronauts individual physical differences, targeting to individualized Chinese Medicine and non-drug intervention of TCM nursing measures, to improve the level of overall health in long-term manned missions.

For more than thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Acupuncture have been used for treating Qi deficiency syndromes etc. sub-health conditions, and it Rocks.
